         Pets are great leveling buddies

This way of leveling is not for everyone. I choose it because it is as fast, if not faster than leveling in a team. I don’t waste time getting a team together. With 4 kids there is always something going on in my house, and in a team you can’t just leave for 30 minutes to do something.

Choosing your leveling buddy

You picked a ruby, Yay! All done.
Let me explain, for this article, we are discussing leveling, and the way you level is to kill a monster fast, and move on to the next monster. Nothing hits like a ruby and can be had for under 100K. Lets discuss the Ruby’s weakness now, They are squishy and use a lot of magic, for this reason the first job you should think of leveling is Pet Muse.

OK, Pet Muse but what skills?

  • Sonic Swipe- attacks monsters from a good distance, and improves attack speed (stacks up to 3 times) and has a short cool down. Agility build fires off like a regular attack.

  • Super Sonic Swipe- Powerful AOE that has a very long cool down, I have it and use it to finish one monster and draw another from the pet if it gets agro.

The other team buffs are personal choice based on how many spare points you have.

My picks for pets buffs

1-    Soothing Serenade- Recovers HP of the pet
2-  Song of Serenity - Recovers MP of the pet
3-  Defensive Ditty- Improves pets defense and magic defense
4-  Power Ballad- Improves the pets damage output.
5-  Pet Prayer- Improves evasion and magic evasion while improving block success.
6-  Pet Training Song- Adds accuracy and magic accuracy and there is also a chance of reflecting a skill back on the monster
7-  Resurrect pet- Duh, Get it
8-  Pet Snack song- I really like this skill and use it a lot. It damages the monster, heals some HP and MP of your pet and gives you from one to 5 pet snacks.

Two pet skills I do not get are Cheery Tune and pet praising song . Cheery Tune gives the pet higher capacity for MP and HP, but once you use the skill, you have to use more skills to fill the pets magic and health. I prefer to use my MP to kill monsters and once you get pet snack song, you can keep the pets HP and MP up anyway. Pet Praising song looks good, but you have to put points to Cheery tune to get it and I have better things to spend my skill points on. If I had the points, I would only get level 3 cheery tune so I could get Pet Praising song.

Strategies for leveling with a pet

1- Buff the pet, send it to kill, heal, and repeat. Remember that if you need to heal the pet while it is fighting, you will draw agro.

Pro- You save on armor
Con- while you can level faster this way than alone because the pet does more damage faster than you can, it is still slow by my standards.

2- Fight side by side with the pet.

Pro- Easier to keep the Ruby alive because you take the agro, Fast leveling because two will do more damage than one and you can kill higher level stronger monsters than either you or your pet can fight alone.
Con- Your armor takes a beating and you may need higher subs to heal and regenerate HP and MP.

This is my favorite way to level. If I could only have one pet and wanted to level 3 jobs to 60 I believe it can be done in good time this way. I might choose Doc, Thief, and Muse. Level them in this way, Pet and muse to 15 (alternate levels pet then muse), doc to 15, thief to 15 then repeat this order every 5 levels. This way you always have a pet within 5 levels of you (pets can only share if they are no more than 5 levels above you)

I have evolved to where I have Rubys at every 5 levels and just pick the ruby that is convenient for the job and level I am working on.

I can be found when leveling fighting a monster no more than one level below my pet or myself based on which one is highest. If my ruby is 31, and I am at 28, I might choose to fight Fiendish Florence (level 32 monster in Big Beam that gives good XP) or might choose to use a level 26 Ruby and kill Mushroom Fiend (level 28 Monster that gives good XP). Both of these could be a good choice but the mushroom fiend will be easier to kill and I might be able to kill more of them before needing to rest. Once I level to 30 though, I will need to move to another monster, Maybe the fiendish Florence, or maybe some other monster, but since I have a 36 ruby, I will only need one maybe two levels before I move on to Grotto for Bandits (level 39) These can be pretty easy for a buffed 36 ruby and are easy going to level 36 when I will be high enough to use my 41 Ruby.

Some final things to keep in mind

1- You will get no XP from a pet that is more than 5 levels above you.

This is not the same for pets, They can leach XP from you no matter how far they are below your level.

2- You need to fight monsters of the right level to get XP. Choose a monster that is no more than one level below you or your pet depending on which is highest. Don’t choose a monster that is so high you cannot kill them fast enough to get a good XP gain rate.

3- Using an XP boost badge or ring works to level your pet faster, just like it helps you level faster.

I hope this gets you thinking about how you can use your pet to help you level instead of just looking good. This article is not a bash on other pets, they all have a place in the game, I believe the Ruby to be best for leveling but this does not mean you cannot benefit from leveling with other pets.
